Underfloor Heating Installation Cost Calculator
There are a couple of things to consider with underfloor heating, whether you want electric – also called ‘dry’, what’s known ‘wet’ which is water-based fed from the boiler, where the underfloor heating is being installed, and also whether it is being retrofitted into an existing home, or being added to a new build. Finally, how big is the area of the installation, as that will determine how long it takes to install & how much in materials it’s going to cost.
We also break down how much the likely running cost is of each system to help inform your decision-making.
It is very important to know that we haven’t factored in additional costs such as flooring removal, fitting flooring after the installation, waste removal etc into the costs in this article.
Wet Underfloor Heating Installation Costs
Wet underfloor heating will need to be fitted by a plumber, as it feeds off of the boiler.
What is interesting, is that the materials for wet underfloor heating tend to be cheaper than their electric counterpart. This does not however translate into a cheaper overall cost as it requires more materials overall & it will likely take longer to install.
For a 6m2 room, you are looking at around the £780 for materials, and around £640 for labour, around 2 days of work, bringing a total of £1,420.
However, the price of materials per m2 can range anywhere from £100 – £150 per m2, but on average are £130 per m2.
As it takes a relatively long time to install underfloor heating, we’re using an average plumbers day rate as opposed to hourly for the calculations which is around £320 a day. Some plumbers may still use their hourly rate to calculate their costs though as opposed to giving a slight discount for a full day.
Dry Underfloor Heating Installation Costs
Dry underfloor heating is electric, using foil, wires, or heating mats. Each has its benefits/reasons. For example, if you have a strange-shaped room, pre-made mats probably aren’t going to be suitable.
Each material/method of course comes with its own variety in pricing.
Looking at our example 6m2 room, for dry underfloor heating installation, you can expect to pay around £1,060. This is split between £640 in labour costs and £420 in materials.
The average cost per m2 for materials is £70, but ranges between £40 – £90 per m2.
Again, we use the daily average rate for plumbers for labour.
On the surface, dry underfloor heating sounds cheaper to install. But, considering that it used electricity to run, check out the estimated running costs before making a decision as you might find that in the longer term you might end up paying more to run it!
