Sinks, or basins, serve an essential part of our everyday lives and we can end up spending a lot of time each day using them. Aside from their practical uses, they can also serve the aesthetic of a room.

The average cost for a new sink/basin itself is £200 – determined by most bought from a range of suppliers. With prices starting from £30 and reaching up to £700 for non-bespoke sinks.

On average it will take around 2 hours of labour to install a new sink, using typical plumber hourly rates this will be around £120.

So then, on average, you can expect to pay around £320 for a sink installation/replacement.

Factors in Sink/Basin Costs

There are quite a few things that will affect the cost of installing or replacing a sink/basin.

  • Existing plumbing
  • Fixing method
  • Type of sink/basin

Existing Plumbing Effect on Cost

If you are looking for a straightforward replacement of an existing sink that is using the same plumbing method, like a mixer tap, you are likely not going to experience any additional labour requirements.

The additional costs may come for example if you have fixed cold/hot feeds to your existing taps and they need to be changed to flexible pipes to accommodate a new mixer tap.

You may also need to take into account additional labour if you are adding an entirely new sink to a location that previously didn’t have one, or are planning on moving it somewhere else in the room. For more details on costs; take a look at our new plumbing installation costs article.

You might also need to factor in whether there are other appliances like dishwashers that are currently plumbed into the existing drainage of the sink.

Sink/Basin Fixing Methods

Some sinks will be fixed differently than others, while most bathroom basins can be free-standing others are designed to be built into a vanity unit or are indeed pre-built into one.

When going from a free-standing to a vanity or vice-versa, you are likely to have additional labour costs.

It’s worth remembering that if you are replacing an incredibly old bathroom sink there may be damage to the wall once removed that could need repairing.

When it comes to kitchen sinks, you may find the job becomes a little more difficult as they are usually built into the worktops. It may be possible to expand the sink area by cutting into the worktop. You may not however be able to ‘down-size’ your sink as you could be left with massive gaps.

Type of Sink/Basin

There’s quite a variety of sinks/basins, in terms of materials/styles/functionality. You may be considering adding a waste disposal unit with a new sink. Or going from an aluminium sink to a composite or ceramic.

The type of materials or functionality of the sink is going to have one of the biggest effects on the price overall of the installation.

Remember too, that some will require additional labour costs – like adding a waste disposal unit will add additional time to the installation.

Now you can gauge any quotes you receive to install a new sink. Remember, the average cost of a new sink is £230, but ranges from £90 – £940.
